PCUG Dial-up procedures - Windows 95

Notes:
A. 'Click' and 'Double click' refer to the left mouse button. 'Right click' means the Right button {:-))
B. It's worth installing the latest version of Internet Explorer and Outlook Express (Currently Version 6 with SP1) first. Unfortunately Vrs 6 cannot be installed on a Windows 95 system. But there are still PC magazine CDs around with Vrs 5.5. However you would need a total of 200MB free space on your disk storage.

A.Create Dial-up connection:
1. Double click 'My Computer', then 'Dial-up Networking', then 'Make New connection'. These steps should start the 'New connection Wizard'.
2. Enter/Type a connection name, PCUG is fine (If necessary, type over whatever is in the box).
3. Your Modem should be shown in the 'Select a Modem' area. Click the 'Configure' button, then the 'Options' tab. Tick (Click) the 'Bring up terminal window after dialling' box, Click 'OK' button. Click 'Next' in 'New connection Wizard'.
4. Enter the phone number - 61626500 for PCUG.
5. Enter the Area code. Click the down arrow and select Australia as the country. Click 'Next' then 'Finish' buttons. The PCUG Icon will be created.
6. Right click the PCUG connection icon. Then click 'Create Shortcut' then click 'Yes' to 'Do you want the shortcut to be placed on the desktop instead'?.
7. Right click the PCUG connection icon again. Click 'Server type' tab. Verify that 'PPP: Windows95 ...... etc' is selected.
8. Click the 'Log onto Network' box to clear it. Verify 'Require Encrypted Password' box is not selected.
9. Click the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX check boxes to clear them. Verify that TCP/IP is the only check box selected in the 'Allowed Network Protocols'.
10. Click the TCP/IP Settings button. Select 'Specify Name Server Address' then enter 203.10.76.34 for the PCUG.
11. Click 'OK' twice and close the Dial-up Networking window.

Log-on to the PCUG manually:
1. Double click the 'PCUG' desktop icon. A 'Connect to' window should open. Enter your User name exactly as provided by PCUG (E.G. jsaxon - case is important). Enter your Password exactly as provided by PCUG Note the Password will appear on the screen as a series of dots or crosses.
2. Tick 'Save Password' box, then click the 'Connect' button.
3. You should hear the modem connection tones for 20-30 seconds, then after another 5-10 seconds you should see the Post Dial Window and the TIP computer asking for UserID. Type your UserID (User name) and press Enter.
4. The next prompt should be for Password. Type your Password exactly as provided by PCUG (it will not appear on the screen) then press Enter.
5. Then after a few lines of text you should get a prompt ending in ">" (E.G."[TIP]>"). Type PPP and press Enter.
6.  After a few seconds you should receive a message of several lines including "My IP Address is", etc. etc. Then you should start to see what appears to be garbled text - at this point Click Continue or Press F7 on the keyboard. Do NOT press Enter. After 15-20 seconds you should see a dialog box which says that you are connected and a small modem (or pair of monitors) icon should appear in the tray (bottom right of your screen). Great! You made it!
However - if things did not happen as described above - there is no point in continuing till the problem is fixed.

3. Type www.pcug.org.au/connect/tip.scp . You should get a window that asks if you would like to save or Open the file. Click on Save button and navigate to c:\Program Files\Accessories and save the file there. Congratulations! You have downloaded your first file...
4. Now log off (disconnect) by double clicking on the 'pair of monitors' icon in the system tray (bottom right of your screen) then click the 'Disconnect' button. The 'pair of monitors' icon should dissapear indicating that you are now off-line.

1. Open Outlook Express by double clicking the desktop icon. If it tries to Dial-up, click 'Work Offline' or close that window.

7. Type your Password exactly as supplied by PCUG in the Password box.

9. Click Finish. And 'Close' the Internet Accounts Window.
10. At this point you can also select Options to suit your preferences. But the defaults will get you started...
11. A Test message to your own address is by far the best test to check that you can send and receive  messages, so prepare one now. But just minimise Outlook Express after you have done that. Note: The default OE Option is to connect and send message immediately the 'Send' button is clicked. You may prefer to prepare messages 'off-line' and send them later by clicking 'Tools', 'Options' then the 'send' tab and untick 'Send messages immediately'. For this and other more detailed optional settings - feel free to visit http://www.pcug.org.au/~jsaxon/pc/intro/oeconfig.htm for more detail (once you get on-line!).
12. The PCUG committee uses the TIP News Groups for official messages to members, also the TIP administrators use them to advise impending down times, etc. The address in 11. above also includes instructions to configure OE for News Groups.

C. Connecting and testing Email.
1. Double click the PCUG desktop icon. Ensure that the User name and Password are correctly entered in the 'Connect to' window. Also ensure that 'Save Password' is ticked. Click the 'Connect' button.
2. After the series of tones and noises a series of quick messages should flash on the screen about 'Verifying User name and password', and 'logging onto Network' - then, if all is well, you may receive a message about being 'logged onto PCUG'.
3. You can now open Outlook Express and send and receive that test message by clicking the 'Send/Receive' button. After the message has been sent, you may have to click the 'Send/Receive' button again to receive your message.
4. If things don't happen as expected - please refer to the 'trouble shooting' page.

D. Disconnecting.
1. Right click the 'connection' icon in the 'System tray'. Left Click on 'Disconnect'.
